Step Into the Sun by R.S

This new school year, I joined the staff of my school's newspaper, titled the Coastal Chronicle, as the poetry column writer! My first entry will be in the September issue of the paper, and I wrote a poem specifically for the paper. Here it is:

Step Into the Sun

by R.S

It's easy to put on a mask

To pretend to be someone you're not

Even subtly

To nod along when you don't agree

To allow yourself to be pushed into the shadows

To let your voice be silenced

I do it too

And it's hard to stop

But at least notice!

Push gently

Don't disagree, but don't agree

Step into the sun gently

Don't whisper, but don't shout

Speak up!

You deserve to be listened to

To be seen

No matter what

So there it is! I think it's a great way to introduce the school to my poetry, and I think it has a really important message for high school students. In school, there's this pressure to conform and agree and have friends who are similar to you, but I want to spread the message that it's okay to disagree with your friends, stand out, and state your opinion. I hope my message comes across to others and is beneficial to someone. Thanks for reading!

a love of reading paired with aphantasia

Today, I want to talk about the intersection of two things I'm passionate about: reading and autism. I am autistic, and I experience a thing called aphantasia. Let's talk about it!
